Quite the workout, but hard on the knees and wrists!

Reviewed by Ellen B., 2010-03-07

I would consider myself new to working out and to cardio especially. I have been doing mostly weight training for the last 6 months or so, and I realized I needed to do a lot more cardio if I wanted to lose more weight, so I gave this a go.

Very hard for beginners or overweight people. I had to stop and rest a number of times, and this was just on level one. Haven't even made it to level 2 yet. She relies on lots of jumpy movements (jumping jacks, jump squats, etc) and by the end of the workout on day 3, my knees and wrists needed a break. Very hard on the joints unless you have a very thick mat underneath.

If you don't have a problem with joints, this will certainly get you sweating!

Good workout, not great, Jillian on the other hand.......

This workout is good, it's not great however. I am in good shape, workout 5-6 days a week and do cardio and weights.

Here's my problem with Jillian - she is way to full of herself and it is annoying, here's some examples:

As soon as level 1 starts, Jillian walks in with this "full of myself" attitude. Scripted of course; saying to the other 2 girls doing the workout with her, "so you think you can handle it huh, we'll see" - obnoxious.

Then she gets really full of herself when she says "I'm hoping you know me, (with a smug look on her face) I'm Jillian" - not needed, come on.

Shortly thereafter she says "if you want to look like this (as she is pointing to one of the girls) watch her, and you'll get there in no time......right.....ya, right" - are you kidding me, you are supposed to be encouraging people, not belittling them.

So, if you can get past her annoying attitude, it's an okay workout, but not as good as Beachbody.

Holy Crap

I have purchased quite a few dvds - trying to lose weight and tone up. Usually I can get through most of the workout before becoming tired. 5 minutes into this dvd, and I was breathing heavy. I know now not to try to warm up before hand (bike ride) because you will get all the warm up you need in the first 5 minutes. Wow..

It works!

I did this dvd for 12 days and could really start to see some changes in my strength and muscle tone and I had more energy. However, on day 12 I strained/sprained my knee and haven't been able to complete the dvd for several days. You really need to be careful not to overdo it! Jillian is so encouraging to really push hard and I think I pushed too hard. If you use caution and don't stress your body too much, I think you will find success. I like how the dvd is broken down into small sections so that you don't get bored of the same thing over and over. I'd highly recommend it, just watch the knees!

pretty good for a light workout. dont expect to see drastic results.

i am a female 5'9, 29 years old and 147 lbs. i am trying to lose 10 pounds (not gonna happen... well maybe) and tone up for my wedding.

a month ago i started going to the gym for the first time in my life. i've been going 4 or 5 times a week, taking spin, sculpt and conditioning classes. when i first started going i felt like throwing up. but now i am starting to see definition and while i definitely work hard, i dont feel sick while i'm there... i feel good. and i think i will be "fit for life" from now on. it started as a wedding diet, but it's become a life NEED. today i couldnt go to the gym so i decided to finally do this dvd.

i know you all want to hear about results... but I dont have those for you now because i only did level ONE one time just now. i will give you my review as someone who just recently started working out. THIS REVIEW IS ONLY FOR LEVEL 1

jillian does a good job combining cardio with strength exercises. for people that say level one is too hard... you have a VERY long way to go-- not to discourage you. you need to push yourself. you are very out of shape, and level one is really NOTHING to me now. and, i repeat, i have been only working out 1 month. sure i felt warm and it felt pretty good, but this is really a LIGHT WEIGHT workout. i did NOT break a sweat at all. this workout is kind of like the sculpt and conditioning classes i take at the gym. except those classes are 1 hr long, and this is just 20 minutes and much easier! i have seen results from being at the gym for a month doing 1 hr classes 4 to 5 times a week, but i have to say that if you're JUST doing 20 minutes of this every day for a month, you really cant expect to see much except some toning and maybe some added flexibility.

I must admit, while i did the unmodified versions of all the exercises, i have HORRIBLE upper body strength and had to do the modified push-ups. a month ago i couldnt even do those!

i'm giving it 4 stars cuz for 20 minutes, Jillian gives us the best workout she can, in 3 different levels. the thing is, if you're serious about weight loss or you have a big goal, this is NOT going to be enough. this is a good substitute for when you CANT go to the gym. she should be honest about that. but at one point she does say "if you're just going to do 20 minutes, you can't stop for even 1 second."

i felt like level one was a good "warm up." In fact, now that i am warmed up, I am going to try level 2.
